City of Irvine

The La Jolla Institute was asked to facilitate the City of Irvine’s Telecommunications Task Force meetings. The purpose of these meetings was to assist the City in developing a telecommunications policy to address the vision, roles, and impacts of telecommunications. In accordance with these requirements, LJI helped to answer the following questions:

  • What are the dynamics of cities in the Information Age? How is the New Economy & New Ways of Working influencing economic development at the local level?
  • What are the four critical elements to an Information Age city?
  • What kind of self-assessment should cities be conducting to better understand their strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities in the Information Age?
  • How can telecommunications infrastructure enable new economic growth?
  • What telecommunications policies will have the most impact at the local level?
  • How does the 1996 Federal Telecommunications Act affect local policy?
  • How can local leaders balance the competing interests of both existing and emerging telecommunications providers?
