The La Jolla Institute was asked to facilitate the City
of Irvines Telecommunications Task Force meetings. The purpose
of these meetings was to assist the City in developing a telecommunications
policy to address the vision, roles, and impacts of telecommunications.
In accordance with these requirements, LJI helped to answer the
following questions:
- What are
the dynamics of cities in the Information Age? How is the New
Economy & New Ways of Working influencing economic development
at the local level?
- What are
the four critical elements to an Information Age city?
- What kind
of self-assessment should cities be conducting to better understand
their strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities in the
Information Age?
- How can telecommunications
infrastructure enable new economic growth?
- What telecommunications
policies will have the most impact at the local level?
- How does
the 1996 Federal Telecommunications Act affect local policy?
- How can local
leaders balance the competing interests of both existing and emerging
telecommunications providers?
